Description

SQL injection in the NetBoard CRM demo platform; specifically, the vulnerable component is the ‘user-name’ POST parameter in the ‘/module/auth/recovery.php’ endpoint. The parameter is vulnerable to blind attacks based on Boolean, error, time-based and UNION techniques. Exploitation allows attackers to extract confidential information (such as the version and type of backend used), alter data or further compromise the CRM environment.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is a critical SQL injection vulnerability in the NetBoard CRM demo platform. The 'user-name' POST parameter in the '/module/auth/recovery.php' endpoint is vulnerable to blind SQL injection attacks using Boolean, error, time-based, and UNION techniques. Exploitation allows attackers to extract confidential information, manipulate data, or further compromise the CRM environment.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability, monitor HTTP POST requests to the '/module/auth/recovery.php' endpoint for the 'user-name' parameter. Use tools like sqlmap to test for blind SQLi techniques (Boolean, error, time-based, UNION). Example command: sqlmap -u 'http://target/module/auth/recovery.php' --data='user-name=test' --batch --level=5 --risk=3.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could exploit this to access sensitive data like backend versions, alter or delete data, or gain control over the CRM system. Since the demo platform is exposed online, any user interacting with it could be at risk if the vulnerability is not patched.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or breaches, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy) requirements. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to exposed sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict access to the '/module/auth/recovery.php' endpoint via firewall rules. Implement input validation for the 'user-name' parameter to reject special characters. Monitor logs for suspicious POST requests to this endpoint. As no patch exists, consider disabling the demo platform until a fix is available.
