Executive Summary

Fortra's Core Privileged Access Manager (BoKS) has a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the boks_autoregisterd component. This flaw allows a remote attacker with network access to the autoregistration service to trigger memory corruption by sending specially crafted client responses.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code, gain unauthorized access to systems, or cause denial-of-service conditions. Since the service is remotely accessible, the impact could be severe if the system is exposed to untrusted networks.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service via network access to the autoregistration service. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data or system disruption, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information security).

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately disable the autoregistration service in Fortra's Core Privileged Access Manager (BoKS) to prevent remote exploitation. Restrict network access to the service using firewalls or network segmentation. Monitor for unusual activity or crashes in boks_autoregisterd.
