Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Post Snippets WordPress plugin up to version 4.2.4. It occurs because the plugin does not properly escape variable values inserted into snippets before displaying them. This allows users with the Contributor role or higher to inject malicious scripts that execute when the content is viewed by others.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Post Snippets plugin version 4.2.4 or lower. Check for suspicious snippets containing script tags or unusual variable substitutions. Review user roles with Contributor access or higher for unauthorized script injections.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with Contributor access or higher could inject malicious scripts into snippets. When these snippets are viewed, the scripts execute, potentially stealing user data, session cookies, or performing actions on behalf of users. This could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or defacement of the website.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to compromised user data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Post Snippets plugin to the latest version. Remove or review snippets created by users with Contributor roles or higher for malicious scripts. Restrict Contributor role permissions if necessary to prevent future injections.
