Description

GitLab has remediated an issue in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions before 19.2.8, 19.3 before 19.3.5, and 19.4 before 19.4.2 that, under certain conditions, could have allowed a user to poison cached responses for raw repository files, causing targeted users' CI/CD pipelines to execute specially crafted content and potentially exposing protected environment variables, due to improper validation of repository references.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in GitLab CE/EE before versions 19.2.8, 19.3.5, and 19.4.2 allows a user to manipulate cached responses for raw repository files. This could cause CI/CD pipelines to execute malicious content, potentially exposing protected environment variables due to improper validation of repository references.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to poison cached files, leading to unauthorized code execution in CI/CD pipelines. This may expose sensitive environment variables, secrets, or other protected data, impacting the integrity and confidentiality of your projects and systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating compliance requirements for GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy). Exposure of protected environment variables or secrets may result in regulatory penalties or breaches of confidentiality obligations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade GitLab to a patched version (19.2.8, 19.3.5, or 19.4.2 or later) to address the improper validation of repository references that could lead to cached response poisoning.
