SQL Injection in Animated Number Counters WordPress Plugin

Description

The Animated Number Counters plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via the 'counterid' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.0 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with editor-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. This is a second-order SQL injection: the write path correctly uses $wpdb->prepare(), but that protection is not carried forward to the read path, where the retrieved value is concatenated unsanitized into unprepared queries in both a single-quoted string context and a bare numeric context.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

The Animated Number Counters WordPress plugin has a SQL injection vulnerability in versions up to 3.0. The issue occurs because user input in the 'counterid' parameter is not properly escaped or prepared in SQL queries. Authenticated attackers with editor-level access or higher can exploit this to inject malicious SQL code into existing queries, potentially extracting sensitive database information. The vulnerability is a second-order SQL injection where the write path uses protection but the read path does not.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Animated Number Counters plugin for unsanitized SQL queries in the counterid parameter. Check server logs for suspicious SQL patterns or unauthorized database access attempts. Use tools like WP-CLI to query plugin versions and verify if the plugin is outdated.

Impact Analysis

If you use this plugin, attackers with editor access could steal sensitive data from your WordPress database, such as user credentials, personal information, or other confidential data. This could lead to further attacks like unauthorized access, data breaches, or website defacement. The impact is limited to authenticated users with specific privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and security. If exploited, it may result in data breaches that require reporting under these regulations, potential fines, and reputational damage for organizations handling sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Animated Number Counters plugin to the latest version. If no update is available, disable or remove the plugin. Restrict editor-level access to only trusted users. Monitor database queries for unusual activity and consider implementing a web application firewall.
