Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves a weak password recovery mechanism in multiple Mitsubishi Electric and ICONICS software products. An authenticated local user with administrative privileges can tamper with a management file that stores challenge responses to unlock the system. The file is protected by Windows but can still be accessed by such users.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires authenticated local access with administrative privileges to exploit. Detection should focus on monitoring for unauthorized modifications to management files storing challenge responses. Check Windows Event Logs for suspicious file access or tampering events in system directories where these applications store configuration files. Review file integrity of critical system files associated with GENESIS, GENESIS64, ICONICS Suite, or related applications. Ensure no unauthorized users have administrative privileges.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to disclose, tamper with, destroy, or delete internal information. They could also cause the affected system to enter a denial-of-service condition, disrupting operations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access, data tampering, or deletion, which may violate GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Unauthorized administrative access risks non-compliance with data protection and security controls mandated by these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Mitsubishi Electric for affected products. Restrict administrative privileges to prevent unauthorized access to management files. Monitor system logs for suspicious activity related to file tampering.
