Path Traversal in Eclipse Jetty Annotations

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-18661, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Assigner: Eclipse Foundation

Description

In Eclipse Jetty, across various versions of `jetty-annotations`, and `jetty-eeN-annotations`, the Jakarta Spec authoritative url-pattern rules for mixed `@ServletSecurity` annotation, and `web.xml` defined `security-constraint` on the same `url-pattern` were not being applied if the `web.xml` had more than 1 `url-pattern` for a servlet, and had a `security-constraint` applying to only some of those `url-pattern` definitions.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Eclipse Jetty affects versions of jetty-annotations and jetty-eeN-annotations. When a web.xml file defines multiple URL patterns for a servlet and applies security constraints to only some of those patterns, Jetty fails to enforce the security constraints correctly if there is also a @ServletSecurity annotation present. This can lead to unauthorized access to restricted resources.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to bypass intended security restrictions and access protected resources without proper authorization. If your application uses Jetty with mixed security configurations (annotations and web.xml), sensitive data or functionality might be exposed to unauthorized users.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy). Unauthorized access could result in data breaches, leading to legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Eclipse Jetty to a version beyond 12.1.11 where this issue is resolved. Review web.xml files for servlets with multiple URL patterns and ensure security constraints are consistently applied across all patterns.
