Executive Summary

This is a stack-based buffer overflow in ASUS router modules. An authenticated nearby attacker can exploit it by uploading a specially crafted configuration file that exceeds the buffer size, allowing arbitrary code execution.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires monitoring for unusual buffer overflow patterns during configuration file uploads to ASUS routers. Check router logs for failed upload attempts or crashes during file processing. Inspect network traffic for abnormally large configuration files being sent to router ports.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain control of your ASUS router, potentially intercepting network traffic, stealing data, or using the device as part of a botnet. This requires the attacker to be nearby and authenticated.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR or HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations may face compliance penalties if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update ASUS router firmware to the latest version as recommended in the ASUS Security Advisory to address the stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability.
