Description

countly-server is the server-side part of Countly, a product analytics solution. Prior to 24.05.50 and 25.03.44, public image and screenshot routes implemented in frontend/express/app.js, plugins/star-rating/frontend/app.js, and plugins/dashboards/frontend/app.js concatenate attacker-controlled wildcard paths without containment validation. On deployments using the local filesystem backend, an unauthenticated request can traverse outside the intended asset directories and reach getStats or getStream in api/utils/countlyFs.js, allowing arbitrary readable server files to be disclosed. The affected routes include /appimages/*, /memberimages/*, */screenshots/*, /star-rating/images/*, and /dashboards/images/screenshots/*. This issue is fixed in versions 24.05.50 and 25.03.44.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-41582 is a path traversal vulnerability in Countly Server versions before 24.05.50 and 25.03.44. It allows unauthenticated attackers to read arbitrary server files by injecting directory traversal sequences (../) into URLs targeting public image and screenshot routes. The flaw exists because these routes concatenate user-controlled paths without validating if they stay within intended directories. Exploitation requires the local filesystem storage backend.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Countly server version is below 24.05.50 or 25.03.44. Test affected endpoints like /appimages/, /memberimages/, /screenshots/, /star-rating/images/, and /dashboards/images/screenshots/ by sending requests with path traversal sequences (e.g., ../). If the server returns internal files like /etc/passwd or configuration files, the vulnerability is present.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers to access sensitive files on the server, such as configuration files containing database credentials or API keys, or system files like /etc/passwd. Since no authentication is required, any user with network access to the server can exploit it if the vulnerable version is running with the local filesystem backend.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations using affected Countly versions may face compliance violations, data breach notifications, and potential fines if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Countly to version 24.05.50 or 25.03.44 or later. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict access to vulnerable endpoints via firewall rules or reverse proxy (e.g., nginx). Ensure no sensitive files are stored in public directories. Review file permissions to limit filesystem access.
