Description

A vulnerability has been identified regarding insufficient validation in the Frappe Cloud/ERPNext authentication process, which allows multiple email addresses to be accepted by manipulating the email field in the /api/method/press.api.account.signup endpoint. The vulnerability occurs when an unauthenticated remote attacker adds more than one email address. The service processes the entire value as a valid list of recipients and sends the OTP code to all addresses without proper validation of all added emails (only one of them needs to be valid). Exploiting this vulnerability would allow an attacker to: * Obtain the authentication OTP; * Impersonate someone else in the registration process; * Register accounts using other people's email addresses without access to the mailbox; * Indirectly confirm the existence of already registered email addresses.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves insufficient validation in Frappe Cloud/ERPNext's authentication process. Attackers can manipulate the email field in the signup endpoint to submit multiple email addresses. The system processes all emails as valid recipients and sends OTP codes to all, even if only one is legitimate. This allows unauthenticated remote attackers to register accounts using others' email addresses, impersonate users, and confirm if emails are already registered.

Detection Guidance

Check for unusual registration attempts with multiple email addresses in the /api/method/press.api.account.signup endpoint logs. Monitor for OTP requests sent to multiple recipients from the same IP or user agent.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could register accounts using your email address without access to your mailbox. They might receive OTP codes meant for you, impersonate you during registration, or confirm if your email is already registered in the system. This could lead to unauthorized account creation under your identity.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may violate data protection regulations like GDPR by enabling unauthorized access to user data through impersonation. It could also breach HIPAA if patient or sensitive data is exposed due to improper authentication. Organizations using affected Frappe products must address this to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the patch provided by Frappe Technologies immediately. Implement strict input validation to ensure only one valid email address is accepted per registration request.
