Executive Summary

deeptutor 1.4.0 has a path traversal vulnerability in the EditFileTool.execute function. This flaw allows a remote attacker to use the live tutorbot WebSocket interface to write or edit files at absolute paths outside the intended bot workspace.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves path traversal via the live tutorbot WebSocket interface in deeptutor 1.4.0. To detect it, monitor WebSocket traffic for requests attempting to access or modify files outside the bot workspace. Check server logs for unusual file operations or paths containing sequences like '../'. Ensure the application restricts file operations to the intended directory.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to overwrite critical system files, modify application data, or execute arbitrary code by writing malicious files to unintended locations. This could lead to system compromise or data corruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements by allowing unauthorized file access or modification, potentially exposing sensitive data. It may lead to breaches of confidentiality and integrity mandated by GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately disable the live tutorbot WebSocket interface to prevent remote access. Update deeptutor to a patched version if available. Restrict file system permissions to limit write access to the intended bot workspace only.
