Description

OpenRemote is an open-source internet-of-things platform. Prior to 1.24.2, the get, getUserClientRoles, and getUserRealmRoles methods in manager/src/main/java/org/openremote/manager/security/UserResourceImpl.java authorize callers with the read:admin role without confirming that the target UUID belongs to the requested and authenticated realm. A realm administrator can supply a user identifier from another tenant or the master realm and retrieve that user's profile, client roles, and realm roles, breaking tenant isolation and exposing privileged account information. This issue is fixed in version 1.24.2.

Executive Summary

OpenRemote is an open-source IoT platform. A vulnerability exists in versions prior to 1.24.2 where methods like get, getUserClientRoles, and getUserRealmRoles authorize users with the read:admin role without verifying if the target UUID belongs to the authenticated realm. This allows a realm administrator to access user profiles, client roles, and realm roles from other tenants or the master realm, breaking tenant isolation.

Detection Guidance

Check OpenRemote version with: curl -s http://<host>:<port>/api/version | grep version. If version is below 1.24.2, the system is vulnerable. Inspect logs for unauthorized access attempts to user profiles or roles.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthorized access to sensitive user information across different tenants or realms. Attackers with read:admin privileges can retrieve privileged account details, client roles, and realm roles of users outside their own realm, potentially leading to data breaches or privilege escalation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized access to sensitive user data. GDPR requires strict data access controls and tenant isolation, while HIPAA mandates protection of protected health information. The breach of tenant isolation violates these requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade OpenRemote to version 1.24.2 or later immediately. Review and restrict admin role privileges to prevent unauthorized access across realms. Audit logs for suspicious activity related to user profile or role queries.
