Description

Discourse ActivityPub adds ActivityPub support to Discourse. Prior to commit 1c8518b0f2abdf31cbea3e0b242f74d8994a9ba5, inbound ActivityPub processing does not sufficiently verify that the actor authenticated by the signed request matches the Activity actor and owns the referenced federated post. A remote attacker can exploit these missing identity and ownership checks to edit, delete, or reply to federated posts without the required permissions. This vulnerability is fixed with commit 1c8518b0f2abdf31cbea3e0b242f74d8994a9ba5.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Discourse ActivityPub plugin allows remote attackers to edit, delete, or reply to federated posts without proper permissions. It occurs because inbound ActivityPub requests do not verify if the authenticated actor matches the activity actor or owns the referenced post. The issue was fixed by adding stricter identity verification checks in commit 1c8518b0f2abdf31cbea3e0b242f74d8994a9ba5.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to modify or delete your federated posts without authorization. They could also reply to posts as if they were you, potentially spreading misinformation or causing reputational harm. The vulnerability requires no privileges or user interaction to exploit.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Discourse ActivityPub plugin to the latest version that includes commit 1c8518b0f2abdf31cbea3e0b242f74d8994a9ba5 to enforce stricter actor identity verification.
