Description

Open Zaak is an open-source data and services layer for Dutch case-oriented working. From 1.13.0 until 1.27.2, 1.28.2, and 1.29.0, _import_document_row in src/openzaak/components/documenten/tasks.py uses the attacker-controlled bestandspad CSV field without ensuring that the resolved path remains under IMPORT_DOCUMENTEN_BASE_DIR. A client with an all-authorizations application token can supply an absolute or parent-traversal path to a file readable by the Celery service account. The worker copies that file into document storage, allowing its contents to be retrieved through the normal document download API and exposing server secrets or other private files. This issue is fixed in versions 1.27.2, 1.28.2, and 1.29.0.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-55836 is a path traversal vulnerability in Open Zaak, a Dutch open-source document management system. It allows an attacker with an API token to read arbitrary files on the server by exploiting the document import functionality. The vulnerability occurs because the file path parameter from a CSV file is used directly without validation, enabling attackers to use absolute paths or relative traversal to escape the intended directory and access sensitive files readable by the Open Zaak service account.

Detection Guidance

Check Open Zaak versions with: pip show open-zaak or grep version in installed files. Review logs for failed document imports or suspicious file access attempts in /var/log/openzaak/. Monitor API calls to /api/v1/documenten/ for unusual paths containing ../ or absolute paths.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows an attacker to access sensitive files on the server, including application secrets, database credentials, JWT signing material, TLS private keys, or other tenants' document blobs. The attacker can exfiltrate this data over the API, potentially leading to full compromise of the Open Zaak instance and the registrations it manages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and exposure of sensitive personal data, which may violate GDPR and HIPAA compliance requirements. Unauthorized disclosure of such data could result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust in the affected organization.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Open Zaak to versions 1.27.2, 1.28.2, or 1.29.0 immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict API token permissions to remove heeft_alle_autorisaties=True. Review and revoke any exposed API tokens. Audit file permissions for the Celery service account.
