Description

GYM One is open-source gym management software for fitness centers, personal trainers, and sports clubs. Prior to 1.4.1, GYM One's admin/users/index.php concatenates the search_name and search_email GET parameters into both the user-list query and the COUNT query used for pagination without prepared statements. An authenticated administrator can inject SQL through either search field to read data from arbitrary tables, including user information and password hashes. Depending on database permissions, the same injection may also permit filesystem writes. This issue is fixed in version 1.4.1.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

GYM One is gym management software. Before version 1.4.1, it had a flaw in admin/users/index.php where search_name and search_email GET parameters were directly concatenated into SQL queries without proper protection. This allowed authenticated administrators to inject malicious SQL code through these search fields.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability in GYM One, check if the application is running a version prior to 1.4.1. Test the search_name and search_email parameters in admin/users/index.php by injecting SQL payloads like ' OR '1'='1 to see if unintended data is returned.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with admin access could exploit this to read sensitive data like user information and password hashes from the database. If database permissions allow, they might also write files to the system. This could lead to data breaches or unauthorized access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection principles. For HIPAA, exposure of health-related user data could result in compliance violations. Both standards require strict access controls and data protection measures.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade GYM One to version 1.4.1 or later to patch the SQL injection flaw. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the admin/users/index.php endpoint and monitor for suspicious database queries.
