Description

libIEC61850 is an open-source implementation of IEC 61850 client and server protocols including MMS, GOOSE, Sampled Values, and R-Session. From 1.6.1 until 1.6.2, a successful MMS ObtainFile operation closes MmsObtainFileTask::fileHandle but leaves the stale non-NULL value in a task marked MMS_FILE_UPLOAD_STATE_NOT_USED. If a later ObtainFile request reuses that task and destination creation fails, MMS_FILE_UPLOAD_STATE_SEND_OBTAIN_FILE_ERROR_DESTINATION cleanup closes the stale FILE object again. Servers with the MMS file service and ObtainFile enabled can therefore be crashed remotely by the success-then-failure request sequence. This issue is fixed in version 1.6.2.

Executive Summary

This is a server-side double free vulnerability in the libIEC61850 library affecting versions 1.6.1 to 1.6.2. It occurs in the MMS ObtainFile service where a stale file handle is not properly cleared after a successful operation. When a task is reused for a subsequent ObtainFile request that fails to create the destination file, the stale FILE* pointer is closed again, causing a double fclose() and crashing the server.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your libIEC61850 server is running version 1.6.1. Inspect the MMS ObtainFile service logs for crashes after file transfer attempts. Monitor for double free errors in system logs or core dumps. Use network traffic analysis to identify repeated ObtainFile requests that may trigger the issue.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to crash servers running libIEC61850 with MMS file service enabled by sending a specific sequence of ObtainFile requests. The server crash results in a denial of service, disrupting operations dependent on the IEC 61850 protocol.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA. It is a server-side double free issue in the MMS ObtainFile service of libIEC61850, which could lead to denial of service but does not involve data breaches or unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade libIEC61850 to version 1.6.2 or later. If upgrading is not possible, apply the patch from the GitHub commit d86b4a9c7a903641819235e1678b18901518f3cd. Disable the MMS ObtainFile service if not required. Monitor server stability after applying changes.
