CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This is an integer-overflow vulnerability in VMware Workstation and Fusion. A local attacker with admin rights on a virtual machine using the VMXNET3 network adapter could exploit it to run code on the host system.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires local administrative access to a virtual machine with a VMXNET3 adapter. Detection involves checking VMware Workstation or Fusion versions and VMXNET3 adapter usage. Use commands like 'vmrun list' to list running VMs and 'vmware -v' to check version. Compare versions against affected releases (25H2, 26H1).

Impact Analysis

If you run VMware Workstation or Fusion with affected versions, an attacker with local admin access to a guest VM could take over your host machine. This could lead to data theft, malware installation, or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. Organizations using affected VMware versions may face compliance violations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade VMware Workstation to 26H1u1 or later and VMware Fusion to 26H1u1 or later. Remove or disable VMXNET3 adapters on untrusted VMs. Restrict local administrative access to VMs. Apply VMware security patches promptly.
