Executive Summary

This vulnerability in GitLab CE/EE allowed users to download package files from public projects due to improper authorization checks. It affects versions from 15.1 before 19.2.8, 19.3 before 19.3.5, and 19.4 before 19.4.2.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves improper authorization checks in GitLab allowing unauthorized downloads of package files from public projects. To detect it, check GitLab logs for unauthorized access attempts to package files in public projects. Look for patterns where users access files without proper permissions. Verify GitLab version and ensure it is updated to 19.2.8, 19.3.5, or 19.4.2 or later.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to access package files they should not have permission to download, potentially exposing sensitive data or proprietary information from public projects.

Compliance Impact

This could lead to unauthorized data exposure, violating GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (health information privacy) if sensitive data is leaked.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade GitLab CE/EE to version 19.2.8, 19.3.5, or 19.4.2 or later to address the improper authorization checks that allow unauthorized package file downloads from public projects.
