HTML Injection in EspoCRM via Email Body

Description

EspoCRM is an open source customer relationship management application. Prior to 9.3.9, an unauthenticated remote attacker can send an email to a monitored group or IMAP address, including an email-to-Case address, and place arbitrary HTML in its plain-text body. EspoCRM stores that body and renders it without escaping in Email Received stream notification emails sent to users following the related record, allowing HTML injection and, in mail clients that execute it, JavaScript execution. Earlier sanitization for Post and Mention notifications did not cover this notification path. This issue is fixed in version 9.3.9.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in EspoCRM versions 9.3.8 and earlier allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to inject arbitrary HTML or JavaScript into 'Email Received' stream notifications. The attacker sends a crafted email to a monitored address like a group or IMAP account. The plain-text body of this email is stored without sanitization and later rendered unescaped in HTML notifications sent to users, enabling HTML injection and potential JavaScript execution in vulnerable mail clients.

Detection Guidance

Check EspoCRM version with: grep -r "version" /var/www/espocrm/application/Espo/Core/Config.php. If version is 9.3.8 or earlier, the system is vulnerable. Monitor email logs for unexpected HTML content in plain-text emails sent to monitored addresses.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to inject malicious scripts into emails viewed by users. If a user's mail client executes the injected JavaScript, it may lead to unauthorized actions, data theft, or further compromise of the user's system. The attack requires user interaction to view the malicious email notification.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade EspoCRM to version 9.3.9 or later immediately. Review email-to-Case and group email configurations to ensure no malicious emails have been processed. Monitor Email Received notifications for unusual HTML content.
