Description

PraisonAI is a multi-agent teams system. Prior to version 4.6.78, the `deploy/api.py` module generates Python server code by directly interpolating the `agents_file` parameter into an f-string that is then written to a file and executed via `subprocess.Popen()`. An attacker who controls the `agents_file` value (via CLI argument, configuration, or upstream API) can inject arbitrary Python code. Version 4.6.78 patches the issue.

Executive Summary

This is a code injection vulnerability in PraisonAI versions before 4.6.78. The issue occurs in the deploy/api.py module where the agents_file parameter is directly inserted into an f-string without sanitization. This generated code is then executed via subprocess.Popen(), allowing attackers who control the agents_file value to inject and run arbitrary Python code on the system.

Detection Guidance

Check if PraisonAI versions prior to 4.6.78 are installed by running: pip show praisonai or pip list | grep praisonai. Inspect the deploy/api.py file for unsafe f-string interpolation of the agents_file parameter. Look for suspicious subprocess.Popen() calls in the codebase.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary commands on your system, potentially leading to full system compromise. If the agents_file parameter is controlled by untrusted sources (like CLI arguments or APIs), it could enable supply chain attacks or unauthorized access to sensitive data or system functions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade PraisonAI to version 4.6.78 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the agents_file parameter to trusted sources only. Review and sanitize all inputs passed to deploy/api.py. Monitor system logs for unexpected Python code execution.
