Assigner: Sierra Wireless Inc.

Description

An out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the SPI host command interface of Semtech's LR11xx transceiver firmware where a crafted SPI host command with an oversized length field can cause the firmware to write up to 254 arbitrary bytes past the bounds of an internal, non-persistent memory buffer. Exploitation requires physical access to the device and logical access to the SPI bus.

Executive Summary

This is an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in Semtech's LR11xx transceiver firmware. A crafted SPI host command with an oversized length field can cause the firmware to write up to 254 arbitrary bytes past the bounds of an internal, non-persistent memory buffer. Exploitation requires physical access to the device and logical access to the SPI bus.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires physical access to the device and monitoring of SPI bus communications. Inspect firmware versions and SPI command sequences for oversized length fields. No remote detection methods are available.

Impact Analysis

Since exploitation requires physical access to the device and access to the SPI bus, the primary impact is limited to scenarios where an attacker has direct access to the hardware. Potential impacts include arbitrary code execution, data corruption, or denial of service on the affected device.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability requires physical access to exploit, limiting remote attack vectors. However, unauthorized memory writes could potentially lead to data corruption or unauthorized access if exploited. Compliance impact depends on the device's use case and data processed. For GDPR, unauthorized memory manipulation might risk data integrity or confidentiality. For HIPAA, physical access requirements reduce risk but do not eliminate potential breaches of protected health information if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply firmware updates from Semtech as soon as they are available. Restrict physical access to devices. Monitor SPI bus traffic for anomalous commands. Disable unnecessary SPI interfaces if possible.
