Description

LibreOffice Calc can link a cell range to an external data source, and the link is saved in the document. A document could name a Java database driver for such a link to be loaded from a remote location, so opening the document could run Java code from that location. In fixed versions an entry in a Java class path has to be a file URL.

Executive Summary

LibreOffice Calc allows linking cell ranges to external data sources. A malicious document could specify a Java database driver to be loaded from a remote location. When the document is opened, Java code from that remote location could be executed, potentially compromising the system.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect LibreOffice Calc documents for external data source links pointing to remote Java database drivers. Check for unusual Java class path entries in documents. Use tools like strings or grep to analyze document files for suspicious URLs or class paths.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary Java code on your system by tricking you into opening a specially crafted LibreOffice Calc document. This could lead to data theft, system compromise, or further network attacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update LibreOffice to a fixed version where external Java database drivers cannot be loaded from remote locations. Avoid opening documents from untrusted sources.
