CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is a SQL injection vulnerability in Payload CMS. It occurs due to improper input neutralization in the 'in' and 'not_in' query parameters. An authenticated attacker can exploit this to inject malicious SQL code into the database.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Payload CMS version is below 3.90.0 or 4.0.0-canary.34. Inspect network traffic for suspicious SQL-like input in 'in' or 'not_in' query parameters targeting JSON or blocks fields with blocksAsJSON set to true.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with read plus create or update access to a collection could exploit this to manipulate or steal sensitive data from the database. This may lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or data corruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or leaks, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Payload CMS to version 3.90.0 or later for the main branch, or 4.0.0-canary.34 or later for the canary branch. Ensure all database packages (@payloadcms/db-d1-sqlite, @payloadcms/db-postgres, etc.) are updated to patched versions.
