Description

Frappe HR is an open-source human resources management solution (HRMS). Prior to 15.58.3 and 16.4.3, HRMS PWA API endpoints for employee data do not consistently authorize employee-specific PWA API requests. An authenticated user requests records associated with another employee. The user can request records associated with another employee through PWA API endpoints. Successful exploitation can access sensitive HR data belonging to other employees. This issue is fixed in versions 15.58.3 and 16.4.3.

Executive Summary

Frappe HR is an open-source HR management system. Before versions 15.58.3 and 16.4.3, its PWA API endpoints for employee data did not properly check if users were authorized to access specific employee records. This allowed authenticated users to request and view sensitive HR data belonging to other employees through these endpoints.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Frappe HR instance is running a vulnerable version (below 15.58.3 or 16.4.3). Inspect API requests for unauthorized access to employee data by monitoring logs for requests to PWA API endpoints with mismatched employee IDs. Look for repeated requests to endpoints like /api/method/frappe.hrms.pwa.api.get_employee_data with different employee identifiers.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow unauthorized users to access sensitive employee data such as personal details, employment records, or other confidential HR information. This could lead to privacy breaches, identity theft, or misuse of employee data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates data protection regulations like GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized access to sensitive employee data. Organizations using affected versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Frappe HR to version 15.58.3 or 16.4.3 or later to address the authorization flaw in PWA API endpoints.
