NVIDIA AIStore Path Traversal in dSort Archive Extraction

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-65164, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-13

Last updated on: 2026-10-13

Assigner: NVIDIA Corporation

Description

NVIDIA AIStore for Linux contains a path traversal vulnerability in the dSort archive extraction component where a remote attacker may cause an improper limitation of a pathname to a restricted directory by supplying crafted archive member names to a dSort job. A successful exploit may lead to arbitrary file creation or overwrite, code execution, information disclosure, data tampering, and denial of service.

Executive Summary

NVIDIA AIStore for Linux has a path traversal vulnerability in the dSort archive extraction component. A remote attacker can exploit this by providing crafted archive member names to a dSort job, bypassing pathname restrictions. This may allow arbitrary file creation or overwrite, code execution, information disclosure, data tampering, and denial of service.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for suspicious archive files in dSort jobs. Check AIStore logs for unusual file paths or extraction attempts. Look for files with path traversal sequences like '../' in archive member names. Review system logs for unexpected file creation or modification in restricted directories.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to access sensitive files, modify or delete critical data, install malicious software, or disrupt services. Systems running NVIDIA AIStore with vulnerable dSort jobs are at risk if exposed to untrusted input.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or deletion, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's integrity and confidentiality requirements. Organizations may face compliance violations, fines, or legal consequences if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update AIStore to the latest patched version. Disable dSort functionality if not required. Implement strict input validation for archive member names. Restrict file system permissions to limit write access to sensitive directories. Monitor network traffic for suspicious archive transfers.
