Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in the maestro gRPC broker, allowing a remote attacker with a valid client certificate to bypass authentication. This enables them to subscribe to other consumers' event streams or publish forged agent status, leading to unauthorized information disclosure or data integrity compromise.

Detection Guidance

Check if the gRPC broker is enabled by verifying if the --message-broker-type=grpc flag is set in maestro component configurations. Inspect network traffic for unauthorized event stream subscriptions or forged agent status publications using packet capture tools like tcpdump or Wireshark.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could intercept sensitive event streams between agents, gaining unauthorized access to confidential data. They could also forge agent status reports, potentially misleading systems or triggering incorrect actions based on false information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or tampering, violating confidentiality and integrity requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Non-compliance risks include legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust due to potential data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Enable client mTLS for the Maestro gRPC broker by configuring the BrokerClientCAFile parameter. If the gRPC message broker type is not required, avoid enabling it. Restart or reload the service after applying changes to ensure the configuration takes effect.
