CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is a SQL injection vulnerability in the maestro application's REST API. It exists in the orderBy query parameter of list endpoints and allows a remote attacker to manipulate SQL queries without authentication. The flaw enables read-only blind data extraction from the database, meaning attackers can retrieve information indirectly without modifying it or executing commands.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for suspicious SQL-like patterns in requests to the maestro REST API endpoints, particularly targeting the orderBy parameter. Check logs for unusual database query errors or blind SQL injection attempts. Use tools like Wireshark or tcpdump to inspect HTTP requests for payloads containing SQL keywords (e.g., UNION, SELECT, ORDER BY) in the orderBy parameter.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to extract sensitive data from your database without needing credentials. Since it's a blind SQL injection, they can only retrieve information indirectly but may still access confidential data like user records or system configurations. The impact is limited to data theft and does not allow system compromise or data modification.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access, which violates compliance requirements for GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy). Organizations may face penalties for failing to protect sensitive data. The exposure of personal or health data through this flaw would constitute a compliance breach.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict network access to the affected maestro endpoints using firewall rules or network segmentation. Disable the service if it is not essential. Apply input validation to sanitize the orderBy parameter before processing. Monitor for any signs of exploitation and update to a patched version once available.
