Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves the Vehicle Inspection Certificate Viewer app transmitting sensitive API integration credentials such as an access ID and access key within data sent by the application. This could lead to unauthorized exposure of these credentials if intercepted.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect network traffic for unencrypted transmission of API credentials. Use tools like Wireshark or tcpdump to capture and analyze app traffic. Check if the app sends sensitive data such as access IDs or keys in plaintext. Compare app versions against the vulnerable 6.2.0 or earlier releases.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, attackers could gain access to API credentials, potentially allowing unauthorized access to backend systems or data. Users of the app may face risks like data breaches or misuse of their vehicle inspection information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR or HIPAA due to unauthorized exposure of sensitive data. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding health-related information. A breach may result in legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Vehicle Inspection Certificate Viewer app to the latest version for Android or iOS to address the vulnerability. The developer has released patches and revoked exposed API credentials.
