Description

A flaw was found in the OpenShift console. An authenticated console user can exploit a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability by providing a specially crafted Helm chart URL without proper validation. This allows the user to make the console pod fetch arbitrary URLs, potentially leading to the disclosure of sensitive information through error messages or enabling blind port scanning within the cluster.

Executive Summary

This is a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in the OpenShift console. An authenticated user can exploit it by providing a specially crafted Helm chart URL. The console pod then fetches arbitrary URLs without proper validation, potentially exposing sensitive information through error messages or allowing blind port scanning within the cluster.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SSRF vulnerability in OpenShift console, monitor network traffic from the console pod for unexpected outbound connections to internal or external URLs. Check logs for error messages containing URLs or unusual requests. Use commands like 'oc get pods -n openshift-console' to inspect console pod activity and 'oc logs <console-pod-name> -n openshift-console' for detailed logs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with console access could use this flaw to access internal services, retrieve sensitive data, or scan internal network ports. This may lead to data breaches, unauthorized information disclosure, or lateral movement within the cluster.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data exposure, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Compliance may be compromised if sensitive data is accessed or disclosed due to this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest OpenShift console updates or patches provided by Red Hat. Restrict network access for the console pod using network policies to limit outbound connections. Review and validate Helm chart URLs in the console to ensure proper input sanitization. Monitor for suspicious activity in console logs and network traffic.
