Jetty URI Template Path Parameter Injection

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-76182, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-15

Last updated on: 2026-10-15

Assigner: Eclipse Foundation

Description

In Eclipse Jetty, `TryPathsHandler` and `TryFilesFilter` can be configured to forward requests to template URIs such as `index?p=$path`, where `$path` is the request path in context. However, URI paths may contain characters that are reserved in URI queries so that a path of `/s&a=1` when applied to the template becomes `index?p=/s&a=1`, which is interpreted as 2 query parameters: `p=/s` and `a=1`, rather than just one query parameter `p` whose value is `/s&a=1`.

CWE ID Description
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Eclipse Jetty involves the TryPathsHandler and TryFilesFilter components. When configured to forward requests to template URIs like index?p=$path, reserved characters in the request path can cause incorrect query parameter parsing. For example, a path like /s&a=1 becomes index?p=/s&a=1, which is misinterpreted as two separate parameters instead of one.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to manipulate query parameters, potentially leading to unintended behavior in applications using affected Jetty versions. It may cause incorrect routing, data leaks, or other unexpected outcomes depending on how the application processes the misparsed parameters.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Eclipse Jetty to versions outside the affected ranges for TryPathsHandler and TryFilesFilter components. Specifically, upgrade packages like jetty-ee10-fcgi-proxy, jetty-ee11-fcgi-proxy, jetty-ee8-fcgi-proxy, jetty-ee9-fcgi-proxy, fcgi-server, and jetty-server to versions beyond the specified vulnerable ranges.
