Description

Due to a DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability, an unauthenticated attacker could generate a malicious link and make it publicly accessible. If an authenticated user accesses this link, client-side code reads the attacker-controlled input and writes it into the DOM without proper sanitization, causing attacker-supplied script to execute in the victimοΏ½s browser context. This could allow the attacker to access or modify information within the victimοΏ½s browser scope, impacting confidentiality and integrity, while availability remains unaffected.

Executive Summary

This is a DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. An unauthenticated attacker can create a malicious link that, when accessed by an authenticated user, executes attacker-controlled scripts in the victim's browser. The client-side code processes the malicious input without proper sanitization, allowing the script to run in the victim's browser context.

Detection Guidance

Detecting DOM-based XSS requires inspecting client-side code for improper handling of user-controlled inputs. Check for untrusted data being written to the DOM without sanitization. Use browser developer tools to monitor network requests and DOM changes when interacting with suspicious links. Look for unusual script execution or modifications to page content.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could access or modify information within your browser scope, such as session cookies, sensitive data, or account details. This could lead to unauthorized actions, data theft, or session hijacking while browsing the affected application.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating confidentiality and integrity requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face compliance breaches, legal penalties, or reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement input validation and output encoding for all user-controlled data. Use Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict inline scripts and external sources. Sanitize dynamic content before DOM insertion using libraries like DOMPurify. Update SAPUI5 components to the latest patched version if available.
