Open Redirect in Apache CXF OIDC Relying-Party

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-79650, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-09

Last updated on: 2026-10-09

Assigner: Apache Software Foundation

Description

Apache CXF’s OIDC relying-party component could redirect users to an attacker-controlled URL after successful authentication. The issue occurs because attacker-controlled state parameters are preserved and later used as redirect targets without validating that the final decoded URI belongs to the RP’s origin. Both directly encoded and double-encoded external URLs can trigger the issue, depending on which validation path is used. Users are recommended to upgrade to versions 4.2.4 or 4.1.9 or 3.6.13, which fix this issue.

Executive Summary

Apache CXF’s OIDC relying-party component has a flaw where it redirects users to attacker-controlled URLs after authentication. The issue happens because state parameters controlled by attackers are preserved and used as redirect targets without checking if the final decoded URI belongs to the legitimate relying party's origin. Both directly encoded and double-encoded external URLs can exploit this.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to redirect you to malicious websites after you log in, potentially stealing your session tokens, credentials, or other sensitive data. It may also enable phishing attacks or further compromise your account or system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for safeguarding protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised due to this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache CXF to versions 4.2.4, 4.1.9, or 3.6.13 to fix the vulnerability. Ensure the OIDC relying-party component is updated to prevent URL redirection attacks.
