Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a heap-based out-of-bounds read in IBM Guardium Data Protection versions 12.0, 12.1, and 12.2. It occurs in the TDS7 LOGIN7 protocol parser when processing specially crafted packets with invalid offset or length values. This flaw could allow a remote attacker to read beyond allocated memory, potentially leading to information disclosure or system crashes.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring network traffic for TDS LOGIN7 protocol anomalies. Use packet capture tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to inspect TDS LOGIN7 packets for invalid offset or length values. Check IBM Guardium Data Protection logs for unusual activity or crashes related to the TDS7 parser. Ensure Windows S-TAP components are updated to the latest patch version.

Impact Analysis

The impact includes possible information disclosure where sensitive data might be exposed, and denial of service where the affected system could crash or become unresponsive. Since the vulnerability is remotely exploitable without authentication, attackers could target systems over a network.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized information disclosure or service disruption. A successful exploit may expose sensitive data or cause system unavailability, both of which violate regulatory requirements for data protection and availability.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest IBM Guardium Data Protection patches or updates to address the heap-based out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the TDS7 LOGIN7 protocol parser. Monitor IBM security advisories for fixes and restrict network access to vulnerable systems until patched.
