Executive Summary

IBM Guardium Data Protection 12.0 and 12.1 have a heap-based buffer overflow in the S-TAP TrafficTap TDS login reassembly feature. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this by sending specially crafted TDS login fragments that exceed the fixed-size reassembly buffer, potentially causing denial of service or arbitrary code execution on the affected system.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves a heap-based buffer overflow in IBM Guardium Data Protection's S-TAP TrafficTap TDS login reassembly. Detection requires monitoring for unusual network traffic patterns or crashes in the S-TAP component. Check for logs indicating buffer overflow errors or system instability in Guardium Data Protection. Use network monitoring tools to inspect TDS login fragments for abnormal sizes or malformed packets.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to crash the system (denial of service) or take control of it (arbitrary code execution) without needing authentication. If exploited, it may lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or system downtime.

Compliance Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability could result in unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations may face compliance penalties, legal consequences, and reputational damage if such breaches occur.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest IBM Guardium Data Protection patches or updates as soon as possible to address the heap-based buffer overflow in S-TAP TrafficTap TDS login reassembly. Monitor IBM's security advisories for official fixes and follow their recommended mitigation steps.
