Improper Pointer Validation in IBM Guardium Data Protection Kernel Driver

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-84290, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-08

Last updated on: 2026-10-08

Assigner: IBM Corporation

Description

IBM Guardium Data Protection 12.0, 12.1, 12.2 is affected by an improper validation of user-supplied pointers in the WfpMonitor kernel driver. Certain METHOD_NEITHER IOCTL handlers dereference user-controlled pointers without adequate probing and exception handling, potentially allowing a privileged local attacker to cause a system crash or perform limited kernel-memory reads.

CWE ID Description
CWE-119 The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it reads from or writes to a memory location outside the buffer's intended boundary. This may result in read or write operations on unexpected memory locations that could be linked to other variables, data structures, or internal program data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an improper validation of user-supplied pointers in the WfpMonitor kernel driver of IBM Guardium Data Protection versions 12.0, 12.1, and 12.2. It involves METHOD_NEITHER IOCTL handlers that dereference user-controlled pointers without proper probing or exception handling. This could allow a privileged local attacker to crash the system or read limited kernel memory.

Detection Guidance

Detection of CVE-2026-84290 requires checking for the presence of vulnerable IBM Guardium Data Protection versions and analyzing the WfpMonitor kernel driver for improper pointer validation. Inspect installed Guardium Data Protection versions using system management tools or IBM's update manager. Review Windows Event Logs for kernel crashes or memory read errors linked to WfpMonitor.sys. Use tools like Process Explorer or WinDbg to examine loaded drivers and their versions.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could let a local attacker with elevated privileges cause a system crash or read small portions of kernel memory. This may lead to denial of service or unauthorized information disclosure, though the impact is limited compared to full system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly impact compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it involves a local kernel driver issue in IBM Guardium Data Protection. It may indirectly affect compliance if exploited to access sensitive data, but no evidence suggests direct regulatory violations.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply IBM Guardium Data Protection updates to versions 12.0, 12.1, or 12.2 to address the improper pointer validation in the WfpMonitor kernel driver. Ensure the WfpMonitor driver is updated and monitor for system crashes or unusual kernel memory access patterns.
