IBM DataStage TLS Certificate Spoofing Vulnerability

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-84418, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-12

Last updated on: 2026-10-12

Assigner: IBM Corporation

Description

IBM DataStage on Cloud Pak for Data 5.4.0.0 can allow a man-in-the-middle attacker to present a forged TLS certificate, intercept the connection, and capture the IAM bearer Authorization header automatically attached by the session adapter. The captured token grants full platform-scope tenant API access, enabling the attacker to read and manipulate the victim's DataStage projects, flows, assets, and pipeline definitions. This is client-side SDK code running on the user's own machine, so exploitation requires an external network interceptor rather than a co-tenant in the shared cluster.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows a man-in-the-middle attacker to intercept a connection to IBM DataStage on Cloud Pak for Data 5.4.0.0 by presenting a forged TLS certificate. The attacker can capture the IAM bearer Authorization header, which grants full platform-scope tenant API access. This enables the attacker to read and manipulate the victim's DataStage projects, flows, assets, and pipeline definitions.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves a man-in-the-middle attack intercepting TLS connections. Detect it by monitoring for unexpected TLS certificate errors or unusual network traffic patterns. Check for unauthorized API calls or access to DataStage projects. Use network sniffing tools like Wireshark to inspect TLS handshakes and certificate chains for anomalies.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to gain unauthorized access to your DataStage projects and sensitive data. They could read, modify, or delete pipeline definitions and other assets, potentially disrupting operations or stealing confidential information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, and other regulations. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized data processing, or loss of data integrity, requiring mandatory breach notifications and potential fines.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update IBM DataStage on Cloud Pak for Data to the latest patched version. Disable automatic bearer token transmission if possible. Implement strict TLS certificate pinning to prevent forged certificates. Monitor network traffic for suspicious API requests and restrict tenant API access.
