Authentication Bypass in Nutanix Prism Element

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-84731, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-15

Last updated on: 2026-10-15

Assigner: Nutanix

Description

An unauthenticated remote attacker can bypass authentication and gain full access to administrative API endpoints in Nutanix Prism Element by including a crafted internal management HTTP header. The vulnerability is caused by a misconfiguration in the application's authentication filters. Consequently, the server responds with a Set-Cookie header containing a valid JSESSIONID. This session cookie decodes to a JSON Web Token (JWT) granting maximum cluster administrative privileges. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute root-level commands on all Controller VMs (CVMs) in the cluster, leading to complete cluster destruction and unauthorized access to VM memory and virtual disks.

CWE ID Description
CWE-302 The authentication scheme or implementation uses key data elements that are assumed to be immutable, but can be controlled or modified by the attacker.
CWE-306 The product does not perform any authentication for functionality that requires a provable user identity or consumes a significant amount of resources.
CWE-290 This attack-focused weakness is caused by incorrectly implemented authentication schemes that are subject to spoofing attacks.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability, dubbed Prism Auth Bypass, allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to bypass authentication in Nutanix Prism Element by sending a crafted HTTP header. The server then responds with a session cookie containing a JWT granting full administrative privileges. This enables the attacker to execute root-level commands on all Controller VMs in the cluster.

Detection Guidance

Detect this vulnerability by checking for unauthorized administrative API access attempts on port 9440. Monitor HTTP headers for crafted internal management headers and inspect for unexpected Set-Cookie responses containing JWT tokens. Review logs for unusual administrative commands or root-level activities on Controller VMs.

Impact Analysis

Exploitation could lead to complete cluster destruction, unauthorized access to VM memory and virtual disks, and full administrative control over the Nutanix environment. Attackers could gain root-level access and perform destructive actions across the entire cluster.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Restrict access to the management interface (port 9440) to trusted administrative networks only.
  • Upgrade affected Nutanix Prism Element and Prism Central to fixed versions (AOS 7.6.0.8, 7.5.2, 7.3.1.18 or later; Prism Central 7.6.0.8, 7.5.2, 7.3.1.18 or later).
  • Verify deployed versions and confirm network exposure to ensure no unnecessary exposure exists.
  • If unauthorized activity is suspected, restrict access immediately, preserve audit logs, and contact Nutanix Support.
