Description

MariaDB server is a community developed fork of MySQL server. From 12.3.1 until 12.3.3 and 13.0.2, SYS_REFCURSOR handling is affected because cursor-array reallocation can leave stale references in routine contexts. A low-privileged attacker can open a large number of SYS_REFCURSORs and then fetch one to trigger a use-after-free that can enable remote code execution when combined with another vulnerability. This issue is fixed in versions 12.3.3 and 13.0.2.

CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-85748 is a use-after-free vulnerability in MariaDB Server affecting versions 12.3.1 to 12.3.3 and 13.0.1 to 13.0.2. It occurs when a low-privileged attacker opens many SYS_REFCURSOR objects and fetches one, triggering a use-after-free that can lead to remote code execution if combined with another flaw. The issue stems from cursor-array reallocation leaving stale references in routine contexts.

Detection Guidance

Check MariaDB server version with: mysql --version. If running versions 12.3.1-12.3.2 or 13.0.1, the system is vulnerable. Monitor for crashes when routines use more than 16 SYS_REFCURSOR objects. Look for error logs indicating cursor array reallocation failures or use-after-free events.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to cause a server crash, hang, or execute arbitrary code remotely. This may lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or denial of service. The high CVSS score (9.9) indicates significant risk due to network exposure and low attack complexity.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate GDPR (data confidentiality) and HIPAA (protected health information integrity) by enabling unauthorized access or modification of sensitive data. Compliance may require immediate patching to prevent breaches and ensure data protection measures remain effective.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MariaDB to version 12.3.3 or 13.0.2 or later immediately. No workarounds exist, so patching is required. Restart the MariaDB service after upgrade to apply fixes. Disable unnecessary stored routines using SYS_REFCURSOR until patched.
