Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Progress MarkLogic Server allows a remote attacker with query-execution access to use an XQuery evaluation function without the required privilege. This can lead to server-side code execution with elevated permissions.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the MarkLogic Server version. Run the following command to check the installed version: 'rpm -qa | grep MarkLogic' or 'dpkg -l | grep MarkLogic' depending on your system. Compare the output with versions 12.1.0 or 11.3.7 to determine if the system is affected.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code on the server, potentially gaining control over sensitive data or disrupting services. Systems with MarkLogic Server versions before 12.1.0 or 11.3.7 are at risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade MarkLogic Server to version 12.1.0 or later for MarkLogic 12.x, or to version 11.3.7 or later for MarkLogic 11.x. Ensure the upgrade is applied to all affected instances to prevent remote code execution with elevated permissions.
