Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x before 12.1.0 and 11.x before 11.3.7 allows XML external entity processing by default. This means crafted XML input could trigger server-side requests or expose local files on the system.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your MarkLogic Server version is before 12.1.0 or 11.3.7. Run commands like 'xdg-open --version' or check server logs for XML external entity processing errors. Inspect network traffic for unusual server-side requests or file disclosures.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read sensitive files on the server, perform internal network scans, or access restricted resources. This could lead to data breaches or unauthorized system access depending on server configuration.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements by enabling unauthorized data access or disclosure. GDPR and HIPAA mandate protection of personal and health data, so such exposure risks non-compliance and potential penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MarkLogic Server to version 12.1.0 or later if using 12.x, or to 11.3.7 or later if using 11.x. Disable XML external entity processing in server configurations if immediate upgrade is not possible.
