Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Progress MarkLogic Server versions before 12.1.0 and 11.3.7. It involves insufficient verification of Kerberos authentication service identity during password-based authentication. This allows a network-positioned attacker to impersonate trusted authentication infrastructure, potentially leading to unauthorized access or data modification.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain unauthorized access to protected data or modify it without detection. This could lead to data breaches, loss of sensitive information, or unauthorized system changes, depending on the server's configuration and data stored.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or modification of protected data, violating compliance requirements for GDPR, HIPAA, and other regulations. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to data breaches or loss of sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Progress MarkLogic Server to version 12.1.0 or later if using 12.x, or to version 11.3.7 or later if using 11.x. Disable Kerberos authentication if not required or restrict network access to authentication services.
