Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x versions before 12.1.0. It involves the use of cleartext transport for certain cluster-management communications, meaning sensitive data is transmitted without encryption. A network attacker could intercept or alter this data during transmission.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for unencrypted cluster-management communications in Progress MarkLogic Server 12.x before 12.1.0. Use packet capture tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to inspect traffic for cleartext transmissions. Check server logs for any unusual cluster communication errors or warnings.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could read or modify sensitive information sent between MarkLogic servers. This may lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or manipulation of system configurations. The impact depends on the data transmitted and network access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates requirements for encrypted data transmission in GDPR and HIPAA. Cleartext communication risks unauthorized access to personal or health data, leading to non-compliance and potential legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Progress MarkLogic Server to version 12.1.0 or later to ensure encrypted cluster-management communications. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict network access to cluster-management ports and isolate the MarkLogic Server in a secure network segment to limit exposure.
