Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Progress MarkLogic Server versions before 12.1.0 and 11.3.7. It involves the use of cleartext transport for Amazon S3 connections by default, meaning data and credentials are sent without encryption.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect network traffic for cleartext Amazon S3 connections from MarkLogic Server. Use packet capture tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to monitor outbound connections to S3 endpoints. Check MarkLogic Server logs for default S3 transport settings or unencrypted connection attempts.

Impact Analysis

A network-positioned attacker could intercept sensitive data or credentials transmitted through the affected connection, potentially leading to unauthorized access or data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or exposure of sensitive data, which may violate compliance requirements such as GDPR or HIPAA that mandate protection of personal or health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MarkLogic Server to version 12.1.0 or later for 12.x releases, or 11.3.7 or later for 11.x releases. Configure MarkLogic Server to enforce encrypted S3 connections by updating transport settings. Disable any default cleartext S3 connections in configuration files.
