Description

MariaDB server is a community developed fork of MySQL server. From 10.6.1 until 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2, SHOW CREATE SERVER, SHOW CREATE USER, and mariadb-dump are affected because each does not consistently quote identifiers and values when serializing SQL. A low-privileged attacker can trigger the issue when an attacker-created object with crafted identifiers or values is included in SHOW output or a dump, then create an object with crafted identifiers or values so generated SQL contains injected statements and execute attacker-injected SQL when the poisoned output is applied. This issue is fixed in versions 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-86047 is a vulnerability in MariaDB where commands like SHOW CREATE SERVER, SHOW CREATE USER, and mariadb-dump fail to properly quote identifiers and values when generating SQL output. This allows attackers to inject malicious SQL code into database dumps or commands, which executes when the poisoned output is applied.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect MariaDB versions for affected releases (10.6.1-10.6.27, 10.11.1-10.11.18, 11.4.1-11.4.12, 11.8.1-11.8.8, 12.3.1-12.3.2, 13.0.1). Check SHOW CREATE USER, SHOW CREATE SERVER, and mariadb-dump outputs for improperly quoted identifiers or values. Look for corrupted SQL syntax in dumps or commands.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with low privileges could exploit this to inject SQL statements into database dumps or commands. When these dumps or commands are applied, the injected SQL could lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or deletion. The attack requires network access, user interaction, and low privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data integrity and confidentiality requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations using vulnerable MariaDB versions may face compliance violations if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade MariaDB to patched versions (10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, 13.0.2) immediately.
  • Avoid using mariadb-dump with options like --add-drop-trigger, --system, or --include-master-host-port until patched.
  • Review and sanitize database dumps for irregularities before applying them.
  • Restrict user and server names to avoid special characters like single quotes or backticks.
