Description

Enterprise Architect is vulnerable to XML External Entity (XXE) injection in the XSLT Debugger feature. When a user loadsΒ a crafted XML file containing a `DOCTYPE` with an external DTD reference, the parser processes external entities, allowing an attacker to read arbitrary files from the victim's filesystem. Because vendor contact attempts were unsuccessful, the vulnerability has only been confirmed in version 17.1 but may also affect other versions.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an XML External Entity (XXE) injection flaw in Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect version 17.1. It occurs in the XSLT Debugger feature when a user loads a crafted XML file with a DOCTYPE containing an external DTD reference. The parser processes external entities, allowing an attacker to read arbitrary files from the victim's filesystem.

Detection Guidance

To detect this XXE vulnerability in Enterprise Architect, monitor for attempts to load XML files with DOCTYPE declarations containing external DTD references. Check logs for suspicious file access patterns or errors in the XSLT Debugger feature. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read sensitive files on your system if you use the affected software and load a malicious XML file. This could lead to unauthorized access to confidential data, system files, or other sensitive information stored on your machine.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting personal and health data. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage for organizations handling such data.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable the XSLT Debugger feature in Enterprise Architect if possible. Avoid opening untrusted XML files in the application. Update to a patched version once available. Monitor vendor advisories for official fixes.
