Executive Summary

This is an unauthenticated stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the KeyWord Collector WordPress plugin version 1.4 or earlier. It allows attackers to inject malicious JavaScript without authentication by exploiting missing authorization checks and nonce validation when saving settings. The injected script executes when an administrator views the plugin's settings or when visitors load pages displaying its output.

Detection Guidance

Check if the KeyWord Collector WordPress plugin version 1.4 or earlier is installed. Inspect the plugin's settings page for unauthorized JavaScript code in saved inputs. Review server logs for unusual activity related to the plugin.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can store malicious JavaScript that executes in the context of administrators or visitors. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, defacement of the website, or delivery of malware to users. The impact includes compromised user data and potential loss of control over the WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized data exposure, and failure to maintain confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the KeyWord Collector plugin to the latest version. Remove or disable the plugin if no update is available. Implement input validation and output escaping for plugin settings. Monitor for unauthorized changes to plugin settings.
