Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Tutor LMS WordPress plugin. It exists in versions up to 4.0.8 due to insufficient input validation in the Topbar component's back button handler via the 'redirect_url' parameter. Attackers can inject malicious scripts that execute in a victim's browser when they access a page containing the payload.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Tutor LMS WordPress plugin and involves DOM-based XSS via the 'redirect_url' parameter. Detection requires checking if the vulnerable plugin version (up to 4.0.8) is installed on your WordPress site. Use WordPress admin panel to inspect installed plugins or run commands like 'wp plugin list' in the WordPress directory to check versions.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could exploit this to run malicious scripts in your browser when visiting affected pages. This could lead to session hijacking, theft of cookies or sensitive data, or redirection to phishing sites. Users with admin access are at higher risk as scripts could perform privileged actions.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised through such attacks.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Tutor LMS plugin to the latest version if available. If no update is available, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until a patch is released. Review and sanitize any user inputs related to the 'redirect_url' parameter in your WordPress environment.
