Description

SAP Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence does not sufficiently enforce authorization boundaries within certain administrative functionality. An attacker with MII administrator privileges could submit a specially crafted request to provision an account with elevated privileges on the underlying Java application server. Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to gain administrative control over the underlying system, extending the impact beyond the vulnerable application. This results in a high impact on confidentiality, integrity and availability.

Executive Summary

SAP Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence (MII) fails to properly restrict administrative access. An attacker with existing MII admin rights could exploit this to create a specially crafted request that grants elevated privileges on the underlying Java application server. This allows them to take full control of the system, bypassing normal application boundaries.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for unauthorized administrative accounts on the underlying Java application server used by SAP MII. Review all administrator accounts in the application server configuration and compare them against known authorized users. Look for recently created accounts with elevated privileges.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, an attacker could gain complete administrative control over the underlying system hosting SAP MII. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, system modifications, or disruption of operations, potentially affecting confidentiality, integrity, and availability of critical manufacturing or business processes.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or disclosure of sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, or reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately review and audit all administrator accounts on the underlying Java application server. Remove any unauthorized accounts with elevated privileges. Ensure proper access controls are enforced and limit MII administrator privileges to only necessary functions. Apply any available patches or updates from SAP.
