CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects RUGGEDCOM CROSSBOW versions before V6.0. It allows an authenticated attacker with specific privileges to upload firmware files with improperly validated filenames, enabling execution of arbitrary SQL commands on the database.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for unauthorized SQL command execution or unusual firmware uploads in RUGGEDCOM CROSSBOW. Monitor database logs for suspicious SQL queries and inspect uploaded firmware filenames for anomalies. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to manipulate or steal sensitive data stored in the database, disrupt system operations, or gain unauthorized access to the device. This may lead to data breaches or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or breaches, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data privacy) requirements. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade to RUGGEDCOM CROSSBOW V6.0 or later. Restrict user privileges to minimize access for authenticated attackers. Validate and sanitize all firmware filenames before upload. Monitor database activity for unauthorized SQL commands.
