Description

A vulnerability has been identified in Capital Embedded AR Classic 431-422 (All versions), Capital Embedded AR Classic R20-11 (All versions < V2303), Desigo PXC00-E.D (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXC00-U (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXC001-E.D (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXC100-E.D (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXC12-E.D (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXC128-U (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXC200-E.D (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXC22-E.D (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXC22.1-E.D (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXC36.1-E.D (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXC50-E.D (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXC64-U (All versions >= V2.3), Desigo PXM20-E (All versions >= V2.3). The affected product does not properly validate input bounds before accessing packet data. This could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to trigger memory reads outside the intended packet boundaries.

Executive Summary

This is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in Siemens Capital Embedded AR Classic and Desigo products. It occurs when the software fails to validate input bounds before accessing packet data, allowing unauthenticated remote attackers to read memory outside intended packet boundaries. This could lead to abnormal behavior, instability, or denial of service in affected systems.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires monitoring network traffic for abnormal packet structures targeting affected Siemens products. Use network scanners like Nmap to identify vulnerable versions of Capital Embedded AR Classic or Desigo devices. Check Siemens' official advisory for specific packet patterns or signatures that may indicate exploitation attempts.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability may cause system instability, crashes, or denial of service due to unauthorized memory access. It could also enable attackers to extract sensitive data from memory, though no specific data exposure is confirmed. Industrial control systems using these products may experience operational disruptions.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by potentially exposing sensitive data through unauthorized memory reads. Out-of-bounds memory access may lead to data leaks, violating confidentiality requirements in these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Capital Embedded AR Classic R20-11 to V2303 or later. For Capital Embedded AR Classic 431-422, apply network segmentation and restrict access via firewalls. Follow Siemens' Industrial Security guidelines and isolate affected systems from untrusted networks to prevent remote exploitation.
